The Maine State Society of Washington, DC Foundation


The Maine State Society of Washington, D.C. Foundation has established a scholarship program to recognize Maine students. Each scholarship will be in the amount of at least $1,000 and will be awarded only to full-time students who have completed at least one year of undergraduate courses at a four-year degree granting, non-profit institution of higher learning in the State of Maine, which must be listed as fully accredited in the latest edition of Accredited Institutions published by the Council on Postsecondary Accreditation.

To be eligible for consideration, applicants must:

A. Have been born in or have been a legal resident of the State of Maine for at least four years;
or have at least one parent who was born in or has been a legal resident of the State of Maine for at least four years.

B. Not have reached his/her 25th birthday by April 1st.

C. Have completed at least one academic year and be currently enrolled in a minimum of twelve semester hours or the equivalent in quarters hours, or courses in 4-5 year undergraduate program.

D. Submit a “student’s copy” transcript (furnished by the registrar) of all college/university grades as of the date of the scholarship application and showing a grade point average of not less than 3.0, or the equivalent thereof.

E. Submit a typed, double-spaced composition of not more than 500 words containing background information on the applicant’s qualifications, including academic credentials, outside interests, and community service.
F. Provide a sample of the applicant’s work (e.g., prose, poetry, articles, reports or art).

G. Petition the registrar to submit a certification that the applicant has completed at least one academic year and is enrolled full-time as a baccalaureate degree candidate according to the standards of the college/university.
H. Submit the application and required documents post marked not later than April 1st.

The Scholarship Committee shall be appointed by the Foundation’s Board of Directors and shall recommend the best candidate(s) based on merit. The number of scholarships awarded shall depend on the quality of the applications submitted and the funds available. The name(s) of each awardee recommended by the Scholarship Committee will be submitted to the Foundation’s Board of Directors for approval.

The Foundation will notify each awardee in writing of his/her selection and that the scholarship funds will be sent to the institution’s student financial aid officer. That official will verify that, as of the most recently completed semester, the student remains enrolled full-time in a 4 or 5 year undergraduate degree program. The scholarship funds will be applied to the next semester (quarter) for tuition and fees.

If after an award is made a student is put on academic probation or fails to attend the institution,the institution is required to return the scholarship funds to the Foundation.

Students are allowed to re-apply in subsequent years, but individuals are eligible to receive only one scholarship from this program.
